But do they really grab readers attention?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 name=\"45c7\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\">Other email users seem to think&nbsp;so\u2026<\/span><\/h4>\n<p name=\"82a7\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">There has been a staggering increase in the use of emojis in subject lines.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"1d43\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Email marketer&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/www.campaignmonitor.com\/resources\/guides\/using-emojis-and-symbols-in-email-marketing\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.campaignmonitor.com\/resources\/guides\/using-emojis-and-symbols-in-email-marketing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jess Nelson<\/a>&nbsp;reported that emoji usage has increased 775% year on year\u200a\u2014\u200a(so you know, just a little bit). But could that mean you now blend into the crowd?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"e7a7\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Turns out no.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"f656\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">While the increase has been massive, the percentage of people using emojis is still relatively small. According to&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/www.econsultancy.com\/blog\/69595-emojis-in-email-subject-lines-smiley-face-or-smiley-poop\" href=\"https:\/\/www.econsultancy.com\/blog\/69595-emojis-in-email-subject-lines-smiley-face-or-smiley-poop\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Econsultancy<\/a>, just 5% of subject lines in 2017 included emojis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 name=\"0063\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\">Will an emoji increase the chances of my email being&nbsp;read?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"80ef\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Other marketers are seeing success from using emojis <strong>when used well<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"80ef\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Many claim that emojis help your content stand out in an inbox dominated by text, and that when used <a data-href=\"http:\/\/www.kateycharles.com\/good-thinking-from-katey-charles-communications\/add-emojis-to-email-subject-lines\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kateycharles.com\/good-thinking-from-katey-charles-communications\/add-emojis-to-email-subject-lines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strategically and sparingly<\/a>, they do increase open rates.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"b8b5\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><a data-href=\"https:\/\/fulcrumtech.net\/resources\/symbols-in-subject-lines\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fulcrumtech.net\/resources\/symbols-in-subject-lines\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Swiftpage<\/a>, for example, did their own set of tests to determine the impact of emojis in subject lines. Here\u2019s what they found:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li name=\"ffa3\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">29% increase in their open rate (<em>number of people who open the email<\/em>)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li name=\"5599\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">28% increase in the click through rate (<em>number of people who click on a link in the email<\/em>)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p name=\"d715\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><a data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.returnpath.com\/use-emojis-subject-line-new-ebook\/\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.returnpath.com\/use-emojis-subject-line-new-ebook\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ReturnPath<\/a> also tested emojis in their emails across multiple holidays and found some interesting results. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"d715\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">On Valentine\u2019s Day, the use of lips in their subject lines increased their open rate by 4%. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"d715\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">On St Patrick\u2019s Day the use of the Irish flag emoji increased open rates by over 6%.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"d715\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">&nbsp;And they also found that the poop emoji was the most effective across other days of the year. They sent each email to over 10 groups of 50,000 people and recorded the results.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"62e5\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">They found that 60% of the time an emoji increased the open rate (over the same subject line with no emoji). This means that 40% of the time, the emoji had a negative impact.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 name=\"0fd1\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\">And popular isn\u2019t necessarily better<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"7309\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\">There is data around the most popular emojis (see the list from&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.mailchimp.com\/mailchimps-most-popular-subject-line-emojis\/\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.mailchimp.com\/mailchimps-most-popular-subject-line-emojis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mailchimp<\/a> below), but again, this doesn\u2019t mean that they are the most effective. I suggest testing popular and different emojis to see which ones resonate with your audience the most.<\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"7309\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eep.io\/images\/yzco4xsimv0y\/2kNB5gLxlCeSwMegkQ48qm\/e9b11c4638a3e27b3f2e0bf1e6a316b5\/image-in-mailchimpand8217s-most-popular-subject-line-emojis.png?w=980&amp;q=95\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"7309\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1600\/1*vqzV8cOCjaMGo6CiUMgrXw.png\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1600\/1*vqzV8cOCjaMGo6CiUMgrXw.png\"><\/p>\n<p name=\"2beb\">\n<p name=\"2beb\"><strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 22px; color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\">Send half of your emails out with no emoji, and half with. See which gets the better open rate. Do this over the course of a few different email types to find a pattern and see if emojis really do work for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"2beb\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px; color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\">&nbsp;Then try testing different types of emojis and use of multiple emojis to see which your subscribers prefer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 name=\"5cc4\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\">Emoji Subject Line Recommendations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"9e6b\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">If you are going to test using emojis in your email subject lines, there are a few tips I recommend.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li name=\"b8e0\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><strong>Use emojis sparingly:<\/strong>&nbsp;too many will make your email appear spam-like.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li name=\"129f\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><strong>Test your emails:<\/strong>&nbsp;your subscriber base is different, test to see which style they prefer.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li name=\"bdd3\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><strong>Render:<\/strong>&nbsp;make sure you are testing your email in multiple email clients, browsers and devices before sending to make sure the emoji appears correctly.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li name=\"a4ed\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><strong>Improve:<\/strong>&nbsp;take the learnings from previous emails and let them impact future subject lines.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li name=\"eff5\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><strong>Write, write, write:<\/strong> create multiple variations of your subject line, with different emoji options and give yourself time to choose the best one, it is the most important piece of content of your email after-all.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 name=\"95c7\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\">Sorry\u200a\u2014\u200aIt\u2019s Not That&nbsp;Easy.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"b5c1\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Unfortunately, not all browsers and email clients display the same emojis in the same way or at all (<a data-href=\"https:\/\/help.klaviyo.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/115005257048-Emojis-in-Subject-Lines-and-Email-Templates\" href=\"https:\/\/help.klaviyo.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/115005257048-Emojis-in-Subject-Lines-and-Email-Templates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">check out this article on all the different ways the same emoji can look)<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"b5c1\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">&nbsp;So, while you might see your sunshine emoji just fine in your test email to a Gmail email address that you opened in Chrome, your recipients who open their email on another email client on their mobile might not see the same thing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"aa21\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">You will have to test multiple email clients and browsers to know for sure. Otherwise you could end up sending an email with this symbol in it \u25a2 or the word \u2018emoji\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"8f13\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;check how the subject line looks&nbsp;<strong>when you open the email<\/strong> too! Some email clients display subject line emojis differently within the email.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 name=\"05b3\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\">Could Emojis Impact Deliverability?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"2f56\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">According to <a data-href=\"https:\/\/www.experian.com\/assets\/cheetahmail\/white-papers\/symbols-in-subject-lines-cheetahmail.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.experian.com\/assets\/cheetahmail\/white-papers\/symbols-in-subject-lines-cheetahmail.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Experian<\/a>, emojis shouldn\u2019t impact upon your emails deliverability. So, if you\u2019re seeing a lot of hard-bounces (failed sends) from your emails, then there are probably other factors at play.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"0da0\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">To delve deeper into your low deliverability, start with your subscriber list:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li name=\"fb3d\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Should these people be getting this email?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li name=\"2b95\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Are they all expecting and wanting to see your content?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li name=\"807b\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Could you make your emails more relevant and engaging to them?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li name=\"aafc\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Are you sending emails at the right time for them?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li name=\"5d5e\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Are your emails designed well and rendering correctly across all email clients that they use?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p name=\"c427\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">All of the above questions will help you determine why your deliverability is low.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"7677\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Unfortunately it isn\u2019t as simple as including or excluding an emoji.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 name=\"0c96\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\">So What\u2019s The Final&nbsp;Verdict?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"3371\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Should you include emojis in your email subject lines? Yes, you can and should trial using emojis!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p name=\"33c7\"><span style=\"color: rgb(17, 16, 16);\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">But you need to work on writing a good subject line first.
